Access File Hierarchy?

I'm a somewhat experienced programmer but new to visual basic. I wanted to make an application that would show and list all files in a folder and sub-folders of a certain type (.png, .txt, etc.) but I can't figure out how to access the file hierarchy through visual basic. Can anyone give me any advice or point me to a reference page that will get me started?
